Beijing aims for record books on olympic numbers in 2020, amid hopes of setting an international benchmark as world powers battle to prevent Beijing from annexing Taiwan and eventually seizing a piece of the world's largest territory.

The Chinese government hopes that its Olympic ticket sales will boost Beijing's already record economic growth and drive it to compete internationally in the games - and at home in elections.

But some experts think Beijing's new leader, Xi Jinping, has little time for the Olympics as some countries try to exert influence.

In China itself, there has been intense pressure from local politicians against Beijing's bid, especially over land claims and the issue of territorial waters as well as the construction of a port to connect them with other countries.

Meanwhile, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) is already facing the prospect of being accused of bias as it votes on whether to award the Games for 2020.

Some local politicians fear that having too many Chinese participants will only boost anti-China sentiments and turn them against the international community.

In 2012, Beijing received the dubious distinction of the biggest anti-Olympics protest in modern history as more than 200,000 people flooded into Tiananmen Square, in downtown Beijing, protesting the Chinese leader's visit to the country for the Games.

Then there's the last part of the race where you can either take it out or go slow and take it out. I like to try to slow down and catch the pace, but at the same time we have enough power to keep the pace going, and so I'll do both.


The good thing about having a great lead out is that when we have to chase we can, and I can, keep the bike going very quickly through the final 200 metres, and then it will definitely get too hard for me to keep moving through that section so I need to turn it down a bit.


So there's always the option to turn it back up, but I think a good thing about having a really fast lead out is that you'll be able to use your left hand when you go very slowly, which really helps get me into corners, especially when it comes to the steep climbs.


On to the details.


You're using a different seat, but I think it will work for both of us because there's a very, very close difference in the stiffness in the bike.


In the test we did on Saturday, I really didn't like the handlebar feel – I think that's what will help me get around the track.


On Sunday morning, though, that won't be the case.
